Pictometry International Corp., the worldwide leader in visual intelligence, has one of the most advanced and cost-effective capabilities in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) capture available today.

Pictometry’s LiDAR capture features highly accurate elevation models delivered in raw, bare earth point cloud form, optionally as digital elevation models and a first return digital surface model. Contours and other derivative products are also available.

Pictometry’s state-of-the-art LiDAR capture uses a sophisticated sensor system with a multi-pulse capability which allows for ground elevation measures to be recorded at rates up to and over 100,000 points per second and at a vertical precision of 5 to 15 centimeters (depending on flight and capture parameters). Millions of geo-referenced ground measurements can be collected in a single flight. This technology provides the most accurate and cost-effective LiDAR data available today.

Pictometry LiDAR Data

A. This image was created from the first return of the LiDAR pulse with the brighter pixels representing a higher intensity reflection
of the pulse.

B. This image was created by coding the measured elevation from high (red) to low (blue).

C. Since each pulse return measures a point in 3D space, the previous image can also be presented in 3D. Note that this is not a 3D model, but a series of 3D points.

Pictometry’s LiDAR Dataset and Imagery

• Vegetation analysis
• Watershed and hydro studies
• 3-D modeling with high quality dataset
• Volumetric Studies
• Disaster management
• Identification of coastal erosion

about us

When purchased in conjunction with Pictometry’s oblique and orthogonal imagery, a digital elevation model (DEM) from Pictometry’s LiDAR capture has several valuable applications. It can be used to ortho-rectify and improve the horizontal accuracy of orthogonal imagery, and can also be blended with oblique imagery to improve horizontal accuracy and the visual overlay of GIS data.

Future LiDAR updates can also reveal important changes to topography over time when used in comparison to original or baseline LiDAR data. These comparisons, for example, can cost-effectively and accurately pinpoint significant soil and shoreline erosion issues and more.

Background information on LiDAR

about us

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a remote sensing technology that utilizes a pulsed infrared laser to measure range and other properties of a distant object. Like the similar radar technology, which uses radio waves instead of light, the range to an object is determined by measuring the time delay between transmission of a pulse and detection of the reflected signal. Additional information about the target is carried by the intensity of the reflected pulse, as well as the number of reflections received. The primary difference between LiDAR and radar is that with LiDAR, much shorter wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum are used, typically in the visible or near infrared. LiDAR is commonly used for watershed/environmental analysis, predicting effluent transit, forestry, mining, urban planning, military planning and other areas requiring high levels of accuracy in measurement.
